Pediatrics

Pediatrics is one of the oldest specialties within Chinese medicine. In TCM, infants and children are not treated in the same manner as adults. They are considered unique with distinctive physiology and pathophysiology of diseases that merit different treatment from adults. Children are developmentally immature which is reflected in their anatomy, physiology, mental and emotional capacities. Their constitutions are under-developed and their bodies are rapidly changing.  Based on this tenet, young children are prone to certain diseases and accordingly, there are particular methods for diagnosis and treatment of disease in pediatrics.

As parents know too well, children are prone to rapid and extreme illness usually followed by a quick return to health. Their digestive and immune systems are inherently weak. The treatment of children in TCM entails not only treatment of disease but also a focus on promoting developmental health. This is achieved by a combination of therapies such as acupuncture/acupressure, cutaneous stimulation, herbal medicine, tui na and often dietary recommendations. Acupuncture is a safe and effective means of treating numerous commonly encountered pediatric diseases, such as:

  • allergies
  • anxiety
  • asthma
  • bedwetting
  • common cold
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • eczema
  • food sensitivities
  • growing pains
  • delayed motor development
  • sleep disorders
  • urinary reflux
  • tics
  • recurrent ear infections
